Wildlife Habitat
A little space in the corner makes a big impact in the yard

When it comes to upkeep in my yard, I’ll admit it — I fall squarely into the “I like it manicured” camp. I grow a bit of everything: natives, non-natives, edibles, ornamentals, and the occasional plant that just shows up and dares me to move it. But no matter what’s growing, I keep things neat and tidy. It’s how I enjoy my space.
One of my favorite sayings is: “It only grows in my yard if I want it to grow! Everything else is a freeloader, and I don’t run a charity.”
Some gardeners are the opposite. They toss seeds into the wind and let nature run its course. I find wading through two-foot-tall grass just isn’t my idea of a good time.
A lot of folks say they let things go wild to create wildlife habitat. And honestly, that's a wonderful idea. I recommend it to everyone. But here’s the part I think people forget: you don’t have to turn your entire yard into a bird sanctuary to make a difference.
All you need is a small stumpery, a leftover pile of leaves, or a brush pile tucked into a corner of the yard… just a little pocket of habitat. That's all it takes to keep the local wildlife very happy. Having the brush pile in one area and a wide-open field for birds to forage is actually an ideal setup. They can hunt for food, then dive to safety if needed. It gives them a safe place to hang out.
You’d be surprised how many birds, bugs, and small critters like rabbits will use a simple pile of brush. It keeps them dry and comfortable through the winter. It also attracts beneficial insects that overwinter there—and later become food for the wildlife you’re supporting.
It’s a win-win: easy to set up, and the best part? It doesn’t cost a dime!
Imagine that: I can grow all the plants I want, keep everything neat and tidy, set up one small wild corner, and still attract all the wildlife my yard needs to stay vibrant and healthy.
Who could say no to that?
