DE, Bt, and Neem Oil—Myths, Miracles, or Magic

Hold on to your leaves—we're getting ready to tackle the Holy Grail—the Trifecta of products that take care of just about every pest your garden can experience—or so we're told...

If you've been gardening for more than ten minutes, I'd lay odds that you've already heard about these three. Search almost any garden problem online and you'll find one—or all three—recommended as the answer.

If you've used them, though, there's a good chance you've stood back, shaken your head, and said, "HUH."

The truth is, they do work and they work very well—but only for what they are intended for, NOT for what many indicate they are good for.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE)

First there's Diatomaceous Earth. This one actually amazes me. It feels like a talc to us, but to a bug, it's very different. It's composed of fossilized microscopic algae skeletons (diatoms) made of silica. It works by stripping away the protective waxy layer from the insect's exoskeleton. Once that wax layer is stripped away, the insect rapidly dehydrates and dies.

While it can work well as a barrier for slugs and certain crawling pests, people overestimate its effectiveness for insects such as ants. The workers can often walk right through it, and because it’s a contact killer that only affects the bugs above ground, it never reaches the queen. They might relocate, but it doesn't kill them off.

What really gets me spinning is seeing people recommend DE for things like spider mites, sharpshooters, leaf-footed bugs, or squash vine borers. For those pests, it's honestly not a good fit. 

For spider mites, you'd have to coat the undersides of the leaves for it to be effective. Think about that—the "undersides" of the leaves. Fifteen tomato plants, 100 leaves per plant... I'll just get my coffee while you do that.

Leaf-footed bugs and sharpshooters are a good example of where the difference between "can work" and "is a practical control method" matters. They spend much of their time moving around the plant and feeding through plant tissue. Getting enough DE onto the right surfaces, while maintaining coverage, is a challenge. 

Vine borers? They're inside the stems; something put on the outside would not affect them at all. Besides, are you really going to coat an entire mature squash plant, leaves top and bottom, with a talc-like powder? You'd likely kill the plant long before the borer ever found it.

So what's the best use for it?  If I were to use DE, it would be for a perimeter application to keep things from getting into an area where I didn't want them. And for that, it would work well. Ants, millipedes, some smaller spiders, and many others, would all be slowed down quite a bit. The only problem is it has to be reapplied every time it gets wet. It pretty much turns into something like oatmeal at that point, and stops functioning.

While wettable formulations allow it to be mixed with water for application, once the product dries, it relies on those remaining particles staying on the surface—meaning rain or heavy irrigation will still wash your protection away.

And that brings up another interesting aspect—using it in a raised bed or container. People swear by it for this application, but then they indicate they water at least every other day. Remember, once it's wet, it's pretty much useless. Using it in an area that you're purposely getting wet just doesn't make sense to me.

And the last little note on this: DE is non-selective. It will take out those aphids, but it will also take out those ladybugs, lacewings, and bees.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)

Now let's talk about Bt—specifically Bacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (Btk), the strain most commonly used against caterpillars.

Bt works on specific insects—most commonly the caterpillar stage of moths and butterflies—but generally only when they're small, and it takes a while to work. 

The product claims to stop them from eating quickly, and they die after a few days. I personally haven't had that experience. I've found that you spray, but they eat, and eat, and eat… They do stop eventually, but it takes a day or so. And in that time, they can, and usually do, quite a bit of damage.

I know some will call me on this, and that's ok—so I recommend testing it for yourself. Find that hornworm munching on your plant and spray some Bt on the leaf it's eating—better yet, spray the worm itself—right in the kisser. If you feel confident, just walk away.

I bet you'll pluck it off, though.

That's because Bt isn't a contact killer, and is much less effective on larger caterpillars. The big ones tend to keep on truckin' long enough to do serious damage before the Bt catches up—IF it catches up.

Even the smaller ones have a delayed reaction. Bt isn't an instant knockdown product. The caterpillar has to eat it first. Once inside the gut, the bacteria begin disrupting its digestive system. That process takes time—it's not like flipping a switch. 

I know what you're going to say: "But I sprayed yesterday and they were dead this morning!" Sure, for the newly hatched ones. But those mature hornworms? It takes a much higher dose of that protein to knock them out.
 
You don't have to trust me on this. Do the research—you'll find real-world field observations show they often keep chewing, rasping, and damaging leaves for hours, or a full day afterwards, before they completely stop and die. 

By the time the Bt wins, your pepper or tomato plant has already lost. 

So, am I telling you to not use Bt? Not at all, just don't expect it to be the miracle knockout punch people tend to portray it as. Best advice here: Read the labels—they don't say "instant death." They say control.

One of the other things I need to point out is that the timing for Bt is very important. It breaks down very quickly (especially in the sun) and has to be reapplied often in order to provide the protection you need. 

Critters like Squash Vine borers will be affected IF you can get them to digest it. Generally, those worms will hatch, then burrow right where they sit. Once inside, the Bt doesn't affect them, so they continue on. Some folks claim you can inject Bt into the stems to kill them off. Yep, you can—but remember—it doesn't stop them cold.

Finally, let's talk about Neem Oil

I saved this one for last because it's the most used, most recommended, most complex, and most misunderstood of the three. And that, believe it or not, is NOT your fault. 

While researching this article, I discovered neem is a very complex and varying product. The one your buddy is telling you kills things on sight may not be the one you have in your hand. 

Let's start with what it is and where it comes from:

Neem oil is a natural oil extracted from the neem tree, specifically from the seeds. It's extracted by cold-pressing the tree's seeds similarly to how olive oil is made. The pressed oil contains over 150 biologically active compounds, the most well-known being azadirachtin—the heavy hitter. 

Because of these natural compounds, the extracted oil is highly valued in organic farming and home gardening as an insecticide, miticide, and fungicide. 

Now, before we even talk about what neem does, we have to answer a more basic question: 

Which neem are we talking about?

There are three different things that often get lumped together as "neem:"
  • Raw/cold-pressed neem oil – contains naturally occurring azadirachtin and the other compounds.
  • Clarified hydrophobic extract of neem oil – most of the azadirachtin has been removed; it works primarily as a horticultural oil by smothering some pests and helping suppress certain fungal diseases.
  • Azadirachtin products – concentrated formulations where azadirachtin is the primary active ingredient.
And that's where the confusion comes in: 

Not every bottle labeled "neem oil" is the same. Some are made from cold-pressed neem seed oil and still contain azadirachtin, while others are clarified hydrophobic extracts where the heavy hitter has been stripped away.

They don't all work the same way, yet they're often talked about as if they're interchangeable.

Using the correct formulation, neem oil can:
  • Repel insects
  • Disrupt feeding
  • Help control mites depending on the timing and application
  • Kill some insects on contact, depending on the formulation
But it will NOT:
  • Cure nutrient deficiencies
  • Stop leaves from turning yellow
  • Cure blossom end rot
  • Fix severe diseases
  • Resolve environmental issues
It is also NOT the solution people (and advertising) often claim it to be for: 
  • squash bugs
  • vine borers
  • leaf-footed bugs
  • sharpshooters
  • or ants
These pests require a different approach because neem is not a magic bullet or instant kill product for them. 

Bottom Line

All of these products have their place, and in that place they work very well. The real issue is that most folks try to use an apple everywhere, including when the job calls for an orange. 

When you reach for any pesticide, making sure you have the right tool for the job is paramount. Controlling the pests is much easier when the right treatment is understood and applied.

The last thought I'll leave you with is this: Always be a little wary of the claims you see or hear. I can truthfully tell you I win at solitaire—now ask me if I win every time…
