"Is this a male or female flower?" That's a question that pops up in the community all the time — and not just from new gardeners. 

High school biology was a long time ago for many of us, and if your memory is like mine — well, let's just say I'm glad I remember where the kitchen is. 😉

Being able to identify the "sex" of a flower is important, especially when it comes to plants that produce the fruit and vegetables we eat.



For this article, although I'll briefly define all three flower types, we're really going to focus on plants that produce separate male and female flowers—like squash, cucumbers, and melons.

Two Types of Plants

When it comes to types of flowers, we should mention that plants are organized into two distinct categories — these are:
  • Monoecious — Individual plants that produce both male and female flowers on the same plant, but in separate flowers
  • Dioecious — Individual plants are either male or female, with each plant producing only one sex of flower

Three Types of Flowers

There are actually three types of flowers:
  • Male: A flower that contains the stamen — made up of the filament and anther, where pollen is produced
  • Female: A flower that contains the pistil — the stigma, style, and ovary
  • Bisexual (perfect): Each flower contains both the male and female parts

Plant Flower Types

Most of the time, we don't have to concern ourselves with this. Nature usually takes care of it on its own. Between the wind, birds, bees, butterflies, and many other insects, nature does an amazing job of pollinating plants and dispersing their seeds.

It's in the garden, when we're growing vegetables, that we tend to run into problems.

Garden plants generally fall into one of two groups:
  • Plants with separate male and female flowers, such as squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and melons — like cantaloupe or watermelon.
  • Plants with perfect flowers, like tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and most cultivated grapes.
Now, before we get into flower identification, let me just say: 

Many plants with perfect flowers are self-fertile, although some varieties still benefit from insects or wind to move pollen within the flower or between flowers. Tomatoes are a great example — they're self-fertile but often produce better yields when bees vibrate the flowers.

Plants with separate male and female flowers, on the other hand, do require outside assistance and won't produce fruit without successful pollination. This is where all those busy pollinators (even human ones with Q-tips and paint brushes) come into play.

While perfect flowers can get pollinated with a gentle tap, shaking the stalk, or being blown around in the wind, single-sex flowers need something to physically move pollen from male to female flowers.

The Identification

Now that we’ve discussed the different types of plants and the flowers they produce, let's get into how to identify the actual flowers themselves. Specifically — the male and female flowers.

Male flowers contain one or more stamens. Each stamen consists of a slender filament topped by an anther, where pollen is produced. If you notice, there's no miniature version of the fruit present at the base of the flower.



Female flowers contain the pistil, which is made up of the stigma, style, and ovary. The stigma receives pollen, which then grows down through the style to fertilize the ovary.

You can also easily identify the female by looking at the base of the flower. It contains the ovary, which already resembles a miniature version of the mature fruit.

These pictures were taken from plants growing in my own garden, so you can see them exactly as nature makes them instead of an artist's rendition.

Two Quick Tips
  • Many cucurbits open with a flush of male flowers before the females show up — this is totally normal. Female flowers usually begin appearing about a week or two after the first male flowers, depending on weather and growing conditions.
  • If you have plenty of both flowers, but fruit still isn't developing then poor pollination may be the cause. Hand-pollinating with a small paintbrush or Q-tip can help.
I hope this helps to clear up any confusion you might have had when it comes to flower identification. It is somewhat confusing — especially to new gardeners — but easy once you understand it.
